Alternative Raku Workshop Advanced Alternative Raku Workshop
Angmering (near Worthing), West Sussex, UK

Booking and other information

9th - 12th June 2017 - No longer available

  1. Participants - This workshop is intended for ceramists who are familiar with burnishing and the use of Terra Sigillata and who wish to expand their knowledge and experience of alternative firing and naked clay techniques. Each participant would ideally bring suitable bisqued, burnished, terra sigged pieces - either sculptural or vessel forms. We will not make any work at this workshop as the focus will be on decorating and firing techniques. It is hoped that each participant will take home around 15-20 finished pieces. Most pieces should be of 'modest' size but we could have larger pieces in the pit-fire if participants were willing to take the chance! Bisqued pieces will be available to purchase from the organisers if you are unable to bring your own.
The techniques will include two-step naked raku, ferric chloride fuming, ferric chloride glaze lustre spraying, stannous chloride fuming (Kosai), pit firing, 'ferrink' firing, Indian smoke technique, and the 'mummy' saggar.

  1. Venue - Angmering is a pretty Sussex village very near to the South Downs and South Coast. (see map opposite) There is good road access from the nearby A27, and rail connections to London Victoria, Gatwick and Southampton airports. We can usually arrange transport to/from local railway stations.

The workshop will take place at a well-equipped pottery in the village close to shops, pubs and an hotel. We naturally hope for good weather so that most of the activities can take place outside but, in the event of inclement weather there is an undercover firing area for the raku kilns, a large workshop and lounge area.
